A Tough End to a Stellar Rookie Season

Bad news for Chicago Sky fans! Angel Reese's rookie season has come to an early end. After dropping another double-double in the Chicago Sky's 92-78 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, Reese announced via social media that she’s out for the rest of 2024 with a wrist injury.

Reese was an absolute beast this season, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, and casually setting a new WNBA record for rebounds in a single season.

For Chicago losing Reese might not change much. But don’t worry Sky fans! With Reese’s return and another high draft pick on the way in 2025, things are about to get real interesting. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

Taking Charge in Reese’s Absence

While Reese heals up, Chennedy Carter has taken the Sky’s wheel, and she’s driving like she’s got something to prove. Carter wasted no time in Sunday’s 92-77 win over the Dallas Wings, dropping seven of her 28 points in the first few minutes.

The Sky, now 13-22, are hanging on to that last playoff spot by a thread, but with Carter’s clutch performances, anything is possible.

After snapping their seven-game losing streak with back-to-back wins, Chicago is suddenly back in the hunt. Thanks to Carter, who seems to have rediscovered her cape just in time. So, while the Sky’s season may be a little bumpy, Carter’s making sure it’s anything but boring!

Game Focus

Liberty Hold Off the Aces in a Nail-Biter

The New York Liberty nearly let a 20-point lead slip away but managed to hold on and secure a 75-71 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. With this win, New York completed the regular-season sweep of the reigning WNBA champions, moving one step closer to locking in the No. 1 seed.

Now, A’ja Wilson’s absence (her first missed regular season game in three years) definitely hurt the Aces, but let’s give credit where it’s due, the Liberty got the job done, even if they made it a little too interesting down the stretch.

If this matchup gave you flashbacks to Game 4 of the 2023 WNBA Finals, you weren’t alone. But this time, the Liberty walked away with the win, sending a message loud and clear, they’re ready for the postseason.

Splash Brothers Reunite (Well, Sort Of)

If the game wasn’t enough excitement, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry were courtside, adding a touch of NBA flavor to the WNBA showdown. After the emotional rollercoaster of Klay leaving Golden State, this was the first time the duo reunited in public.

And of course, it was hilarious watching them adjust to life on opposite teams.

Let’s be real, it still hasn’t fully sunk in that Klay’s not a Warrior anymore. You can bet that when they face off in October, it’s going to be all kinds of awkward and epic.

Indiana Fever Resurgence

Indiana Fever’s dramatic turnaround continues. They’ve already racked up more wins than they had in the last two seasons combined!

On Sunday, they rallied from 16 points down to beat the Atlanta Dream 104-100 in overtime, sealing their biggest comeback win of the season. CC has been the spark behind this turnaround, putting up 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 12 assists in the game, another monster stat line for the rookie phenom. It’s becoming routine for her, honestly.

But Clark is not the only one shining. Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Aliyah Boston, dropped a career-high 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting, plus 13 rebounds and 5 assists, making her the first player in Fever history to post a 30/10/5 game.

The Fever are 8-2 since play resumed after the Olympic break, with Clark leading the charge at a record pace. In her last 10 games, she’s averaged 24.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 9.3 assists. At this rate, the Fever is looking like a team no one wants to face come playoff time.

Jamal Murray Locks in

Jamal Murray isn’t packing his bags anytime soon. he’s sticking around in Colorado with a fresh four-year, $208 million contract extension. That’s a lot of zeroes for a guy who’s yet to make an All-Star team, but when you drop 30 points in eight playoff games and help secure a championship, those zeros start making sense.

Last season, Murray averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists in 59 games. While he hasn’t snagged that All-Star nod yet, he’s got plenty of superstar moments on his resume.

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Murray’s had his fair share of injuries, missing time with hamstring, knee, ankle, and shin issues. But Denver isn’t sweating it, they’re all in on the Murray-Jokic show, where their two-man game remains the real Mile High experience.

Had Murray and the Nuggets not worked out this deal, he’d have hit unrestricted free agency in 2025. But now, he’s got his paycheck, the Nuggets have their cornerstone, and everyone’s happy. Well, maybe except for the defenders trying to guard that Jokic-Murray pick-and-roll.

JJ Redick’s Role with the Lakers

The Lakers have been on a bit of a coaching carousel, but they’re hoping JJ Redick can finally provide some stability.  Of course, with LeBron and Anthony Davis still leading the show, the real question is: Can JJ keep the two superstars fresh and ready to go?

In a recent interview on the LakeShow Podcast, Redick wasn’t losing any sleep over it. He said, “Look, those guys are professionals in every sense of the word. My concern for them about whether or not they'll be ready to play on October 22 and be in shape, I don't have that concern. We're gonna work with Mike and Ish making sure that they feel that they're in a great place to start the regular season. They'll certainly be involved in training camp and the preseason here in September as well as preseason games.”

While the Lakers have had their share of ups and downs, Redick’s got a tough task ahead to balance veteran stars with a fresh start. But if anyone can figure it out, it’s the guy who can break down plays and host a top-tier podcast.

Markieff Morris Returns to Dallas for His 14th Season

The Mavericks are locking in their vibes guy. Markieff Morris has agreed to return to Dallas for his fourteenth season in the NBA. And while he only averaged 2.5 points in 26 games last season, Morris’ real value comes from what he brings off the court, and no, we’re not just talking about his towel-waving skills.

Morris was a key locker room piece during the Mavs’ deep NBA Finals run in 2023-24, and the Mavericks clearly liked what he brought to the table (even if it wasn’t in the form of points). This is the second straight season that Dallas has re-signed their locker room glue guy, following last year’s move to bring back Theo Pinson. It’s a subtle shift, but it shows that Dallas has put their priorities in order, build the roster first, and let the vibes take care of themselves.

Morris may not be a nightly player, but he’s there when you need him. Whether it’s garbage minutes or filling in during injuries, he’s still a big body who can knock down the occasional three. Plus, keeping him around means the team’s chemistry stays intact, and after making the NBA Finals, why mess with a good thing?

The Unexpected Workout Trio

In a scene no one saw coming, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, Boston Celtics champion Jaylen Brown, and UConn basketball star Paige Bueckers hit the gym together for a workout ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Curry is heading into another season with his longtime Warriors team, looking to keep the dynasty alive, while Jaylen Brown has his sights set on defending the Celtics’ title. As for Bueckers, she’s ready to make her return after a tough injury, proving she’s still one of the top talents in women’s basketball. All three have something to prove, and working out together is the kind of basketball crossover we didn’t know we needed.

If this is how these stars are prepping for the season, we can only imagine the intensity they’ll bring to the court. Looks like the 2024-25 season is going to be one to watch, so keep your eyes peeled, because things are heating up!
